Lake TAUPO Challenge New Zealand
Four members of Winchcombe CC took part in this 100 mile challenge on 28th November. My daughter Lynsey and grandson James (13) and myself rode as a relay team with me doing the first 50 miles and Lynsey and James 25 miles each. We were pleased to get round in just over 7 hours for the hilly route,
Richard, on his new carbon fiber road bike did the whole 100 miles in 4hr 21 minutes and was
in the top 5% of the 11000 riders that took part. That’s correct, just imagine an event ten times as large as the HONC.
The organisation was superbe with riders starting in groups depending on projected riding time. All riders had timing chips so really where you started didn’t matter. For the relay riders special trailers were laid on for the bikes and coaches to take the riders to and from the start and end of their stage.
After the ride there was a prize giving and one lucky rider won a new Skoda car and several bikes and other prizes in the draw.
The event raised NZD 75,000 (£25,000) for a childrens charity.
The sunset over the lake after the event was breathtaking
