Club updates

21st August 2017 Off By WinchCC

It’s a very busy time & a lot of work is currently being done by club members ahead of the Winchcombe Show & the Tour of Britain.

These are both significant events where the club can “fly its flag”. We have had a somewhat disappointing response to David’s earlier request for volunteers for these events & we really do need more club members to come forward. Details are shown below – if you can help PLEASE let us know as soon as possible.

Starting with some notable achievements –

Recently our Membership Secretary Gerard took on the daunting challenge of the London Edinburgh London 2017 ride – starting on Sunday 30th July & finishing on Friday the 4th Aug. Completing the event within the time limit was an outstanding achievement when over one third of the riders failed to do so owing to the awful weather conditions. More info here – LEL CHALLENGE 2017

A big thank you to Roger Molesworth & Evie Guyll who raised £325 in sponsorship for the event held earlier this year. We have traditionally support this event, matching club members sponsorship & last week we sent a cheque to BHF for £325.

3. Lands End to John O’Groats LEJOG Cycle Challenge
Local Octagearian David Wadsworth has recently completed this huge challenge to raise money for Marie Curie & also Winchcombe Day Centre. The club have decided to make a donation to Winchcombe Day in recognition of this cycling achievement. More info here LEJOG

4. Winchcombe Country Show Monday 28th August HELP !!
We will be supporting the show as usual with a stand & will be taking part in the procession from Abbeyfields at 11.30 am. David T has already emailed club members & is updating our display boards & organising flyers for handing out on the day.

David still needs some more volunteers to help man the stand which is traditionally pretty busy – The slots he needs to fill are between 2 -5pm. please email David on

This year the show are holding a competition for the best decorated cycle wheel – these will then be used to decorate Winchcombe for the Tour of Britain. It’s not too late to get decorating ! – WINCHCOMBE SHOW

5. Tour of Britain Saturday 9th September HELP !!
As David’s earlier email confirmed the Tour stage will be passing through Winchcombe on its way to the stage finish in Cheltenham. A lot of preparation has be done ahead of the big day.

We will be supporting the Winchcombe Town Council FANZONE initiative. The Abbey Terrace car parking area will be closed for the day & will be used as the fanzone with a large screen TV relaying coverage of the tour. We will be supporting this with a WCC marquee & display. There will also be a stage & live music after the tour has finished in Cheltenham

We also hope to have Gloucestershire Bike Project in attendance with a mechanic for fixing bikes on the day & also a Smoothie Bike (mainly for kids!)

It promises to be an unforgettable day!

We have agreed with the organisers to provide some marshals for the event, we also need club members to man our own stand in shifts from 12.00noon – 5pm & also to to help Winchcombe TC as Stewards on the day & with setting up & taking down the fanzone barriers etc.

We do need more volunteers for all of these – if you can help can you please let us know as soon as possible.

– Tour marshalling – Russ Parker – or David Thomas –
– Manning WCC Stand, Stewarding, Setting up/ Taking down – John Taylor –

Please let us know as soon as possible if you can help.
