Once every ten years a penny Farthing Race is held in Tatton Park Knutsford. Cheshire.

This decade’s race took place on September 5th 2010 and will definatly be the last one in which I take part.

The triangular circuit of about half a mile is around the park using some roads but mainly footpaths not more than 6 feet wide. The three main corners were 60 degree turns where bollards had been removed, leaving the hole in the path to be avoided at all costs. With 85 riders, 50 on the course at all times this event is just about the most dangerous race I have ridden. The leading rider was disqualified for elbowing two rivals out of his way and knocking them off, but refused to stop.

I was part of an International Team of four, two Germans and an American sponsored by Hunterpac who apparantly package carrots, hence the unflattering racing vest.

We did 4 to 6 laps and then changed chip to the next members bike. The winning team was the one that did the most laps in the three hour race. Needless to say Hunterpac did not win but everyone got a well deserved gold medal for their efforts.

Will I ride it next time? Not a chance but I will be happy to lend my pennyfarting to anyone that fancies it.
