Cycle Racing Returns to Cheltenham Racecourse This Month

June sees the return of the Leisure Lakes Bikes cycle race series to Cheltenham racecourse. The series once again promises to showcase one of fastest growing sports in the UK, cycle racing. The first round of the two event series will be held  on Friday 28 June 2013, on the eve of the start of this year’s Tour de France. The final round of the series will be held a week later on Friday 5 July 2013.

Now it’s fifth year, the series will be open to both senior and youth riders. Senior racing will be open to 2/3/4 category riders, including women and juniors. Youth racing will start at 7pm, with senior racing starting at 7:45pm.

The main senior race of the evening will last just over an hour and will utilise a fast and testing circuit within the famous racecourse complex. There will be a total prize fund of around £200 each evening and the senior racing is promoted by Cheltenham’s Velo Club Montpellier.

Preceding the Senior Racing will be two Youth races, promoted by Cheltenham and County Cycling Club. Youth racing kicks off at 7pm with a 15 minute race for the under 8s, 10s, and 12s, who will race on a flat 600m circuit. At 7.20pm, the under 14s and 16s compete around the full senior circuit for 25 minutes.

The U8s/10s/12s youth events, particularly, are suitable for all young cyclists keen on cycling and wanting to come and try bike racing for the first time in a relaxed atmosphere.

The youth race organiser, Tim Sluman (Chairman of the Cheltenham and County Cycling Club), said“maybe you are the next Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome or Victoria Pendleton, they all started at event like this. Over the years, we’ve seen a wide range of young riders turn up from the serious youth rider to the young boys and girls on their first bikes coming along and trying bike racing for the first time, we can guarantee one thing, everyone gets a cheer.”

All events are sanctioned by British Cycling.
